On a visit to Rome Monday, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said he had told his Italian hosts that supporting the PA's attempts to declare an Arab state in Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem would damage the peace process. Speaking to reporters, Netanyahu said that “peace must be the product of discussions and negotiations, and not the result of one-sided declarations. If the UN recognizes a Palestinian state, the Palestinians will have no reason to continue negotiating.”

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi told Netanyahu at a meeting the two held that Italy would oppose the PA's efforts to get a unilateral declaration recognized by the UN.
