Channel Two reported Monday night that the United States had secretly invited Israeli negotiator Yitzchak Molcho and PA negotiator Saeb Erekat in an effort to revive talks between Israel and the PA. According to the report, the purpose of the meetings is to allow Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to introduce some ideas she believes will bridge the gaps between the sides.
Diplomats in the U.S. said that if talks are revived, Washington believes it will be able to draft a large number of EU states to oppose the PA's bid for recognition of an Arab state in Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem at the UN in September, Channel Two said. The talks are being conducted on the background of the declaration several weeks ago by President Barack H. Obama that he favors an agreement with land swaps on the basis of the 1949 armistice lines.
