Israeli businessman Sammy Ofer passed away Friday at the age of 89 in his Tel Aviv home, following a serious illness. Yediot Acharonot reported that his funeral is scheduled Friday, although no further details are available.

The Ofer name has been in the news recently because of one of his shipping companies' contacts with Iran despite the international embargo against the Islamic Republic's nuclear development program. Sammy was considered one of Israel's richest people, if not the richest. Independently he was ranked the 132nd richest person in the world. He combined with his brother for a ranking of 79th, with assets of $10.3 billion, according to Forbes magazine.
