Erdan: No Development at Nitzanim

Environment Minister Gilad Erdan said Sunday that he was opposed to the establishment of a private resort at the Nitzanim Nature Reserve near Ashdod. The announcement comes after many months of protests by environmental groups against the construction of what was supposed to be 900 units for tourists, some 1,200 meters from the shoreline. The construction would have required a legal change to the status of Nitzanim, which is a nature reserve.

Environmental activists congratulated Erdan for his decision, saying that the Nitzanim area was a unique eco-system that would be lost forever if development were allowed to proceed.
