The government has backtracked, and will not discuss the inclusion of firefighters who were killed in the Carmel fire should be considered national heroes who fell in the defense of the country. A notice was sent to Interior Minister Eli Yishai of the decision.

The notice said that the issue would not be discussed because of the opposition of Defense Minister Ehud Barak to including the firefighters as heroes who would be honored on Memorial Day Monday.
