Shahar Ayalon, until recently the head of rescue and fire operations in the Tel Aviv area, is now the country's top firefighter, taking charge on Thursday of the national organization responsible for firefighting and lifesaving. He is taking over for outgoing fire chief Shimon Romach.
At an installation ceremony, Ayalon said that Israel had much work to do in the area of firefighting, and that the country was still studying the lessons of last year's massive Carmel fire. Speaking at the ceremony, Public Security Minister Yitzchak Aharonovich said that he hoped that Israel's firefighting forces would be beefed up significantly, in terms of personnel and equipment, within the coming months.
