Police arrested 59 people in Paris Sunday during an unauthorized demonstration against a ban on Muslim face coverings which goes into effect on Monday. Under the new law, women who wear a burka (full-length body covering) or nikab (face covering) in public face a fine of 150 Euros. Anyone forcing a woman to cover her face risks a 30,000 Euro fine and a year in jail.
Instructions to police say they are not authorized to remove a garment that conceals the face. Additionally the law is not applicable in and around mosques or in private vehicles.
