Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad granted citizenship Thursday to thousands of Kurds living in the northeastern part of the country in an effort to calm protests by opponents of his regime.
Al-Assad also fired the governor of the Homs district, where violent confrontations broke out between security forces and protesters.
