United States Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced Monday that the U.S. is “well positioned” to begin withdrawing some troops from Afghanistan in July, but that a substantial force would remain in the country.
Gates further said that Washington is beginning talks with the Western-backed Afghan government about keeping an American security presence in the country beyond 2014.
