The cabinet approved, on Sunday, an initiative by Justice Minister Ya'akov Ne'eman and Minister for the Improvement of Government Services, Michael Eitan, which would include a freedom of information unit in the Justice Ministry. The Justice Minister's Office says the unit will work to implement the freedom of information law and increase transparency via initiated transmissions of information and the opening of opportunities for responses to freedom of information requests.
Among the functions of the unit will be setting guidelines for the publication of government information, processing requests for information under the freedom of information law. It will also handle complaints about information not released.
