The Foreign Ministry has decided to appoint its first Ethiopian-Israeli ambassador. Several candidates are under consideration for the post. Whoever is chosen will be sent to represent Israel in Addis Ababa.
Senior figures in the Ethiopian-Israeli community praised the idea. An Ethiopian-born ambassador will understand the language, mentality, and culture of Ethiopia, and thus will be uniquely positioned to do the job well, they said.
MK Shlomo Mula (Kadima), himself an immigrant from Ethiopia, said, “It's about time that the government stops seeing Ethiopian immigrants as people who need support, and starts seeing them as people who are able to help in the realm of diplomacy.”
