Tunisian Prime Minister Mohamed Ghannouchi announced Sunday that he was resigning. Ghannouchi cited renewed protests by the opposition during a television interview. Critics accused him of being too close to the government of ousted president Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali.
Interim President Fouad Mebazaa named former foreign minister Beji Caid-Essebsi to replace Ghannouchi and called for calm to return after violent new protests.
