New Zealand has revised downward the death toll in the earthquake Monday night. Civil Defense authorities in the country now say that 38 people were killed in the quake – and not 65, as had been reported earlier.
Reports from the country said that there had at least 11 aftershocks since the main quake, several of them measuring at least 4 on the Richter scale. The New Zealand government is considering whether to declare a state of emergency.
