Egyptian state television reported on Sunday that Egypt has released 108 political prisoners on the order of Prime Minister Ahmed Shafik.
On Saturday, Shafik was quoted as saying that 222 prisoners would be released soon, but did not specify when. He also claimed that only a handful of people were arrested during the popular uprising in the country.
Human rights organizations have claimed, however, that thousands of Egyptians were detained without being charged under the emergency laws which were imposed in the country, and that many of them were political prisoners.
