Iran TV said Sunday that two Iranian warships had crossed the Suez Canal Sunday morning on their way to Syria. There was no confirmation from any other source. Israeli officials said last week that Iran's dispatch of the warships was a provocation.
On Friday, Washington said that if the warships entered the Mediterranean, U.S. forces would attempt to stop the ships in order to determine whether they were carrying illegal cargo. Egyptian news sources said that authorities in the country had granted a permit for the ships to pass through, after being given guarantees that they would not be carrying weapons.
