Appraisal: Tantawi Brought About Mubarak's Resignation

Sources in Jerusalem say Egypt's new leader, Defense Minister Muhamad Hussein Tantawi, had a great deal of influence in former president Hosni Mubarak's decision to resign Friday evening. The appraisal was shared by a number of media sources in the Middle East, as well as the Washington Post.

An American think tank reported in October that the military forced Mubarak to change a plan that would have put his son Gamal in his place. The army was opposed because Gamal had no military background. Tantawi's name has been mentioned as a successor to Mubarak. Despite his opposition to the peace agreement with Israel, Egyptian sources say he has respectful, friendly relations with Defense Minister Ehud Barak.
