Now that the Defense Ministry has requested the appointment of Major General Benny Ganz as IDF Chief of Staff, one family is speaking our against the decision. Border Guard officer, Medhat Yousef was the soldier who bled to death awaiting rescue in the Joseph's Tomb battle in 2000. His family is mulling over whether or not to file a petition against the man they blame for their son's death.
His brother Mahdi Yousef stated, "Ganz was a division commander during the events. He visited us and said that what was done then was the best move, [but] everyone knows today that was not true. Ganz made a mistake and messed up."
Joseph's Tomb is the ancient burial site of the Biblical Joseph located on the outskirts of the Palestinian Authority controlled city of Shchem. When it was ceded to the PA in 2000 rioters ransacked the site. Yousef, a non-Jewish soldier in the IDF was shot and injured. The decision was made to leave him rather then send troops to rescue him.
