MK Ariel: Violation of Agreement a Terrifying Precedent

Member of Knesset Uri Ariel (National Union) attacked the government Monday for turning a blind eye to the presence of the Egyptian army in the Sinai peninsula, in violation of Israel's 1979 peace treaty with Egypt. Responding to reports that Israel had okayed the deployment of troops in the area to control anti-government disturbances, he said, "This government does not have the right to enable Egypt to break even a comma of the peace accords. It's a terrifying precedent for the future."

MK Ariel continued, "Anyone who knows the Middle East knows that forces which improved their positions against Israel won't withdraw easily and it doesn't matter if they're commanded by [embattled Egyptian President Hosni] Mubarak or his succcessor."
