Peru has recognized an independent and sovereign Palestinian state, The Associated Press reported on Monday.
The decision was announced by Foreign Minister Jose Antonio Garcia Belaunde. It does not, however, recognize the Palestinian state's borders as being on those territories occupied by Jordan between 1948 and 1967.
Peru's announcement came after similar announcements made by Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Bolivia. Garcia said during that announcement that Peru recognizes Israel's indisputable right to exist without any threats to its people.
