The Knesset has approved a bill which would see strict limits on alcohol levels for young drivers up to the age of 24 and professional drivers of buses, taxis and commercial vehicles.

Under the new law, initiated by MK Hamad Amar (Yisrael Beiteinu), the alcohol concentration limit for young and drivers will be 10 milligrams of alcohol in 100 ml of blood, compared to 50 milligrams allowed for other drivers.

MK Amar said: "This is the first bill which I am passing in the Knesset as a lawmaker. I'm glad I was given the right to make laws to help the citizens of Israel. I hope that this bill will help us fight traffic accidents and prevent innocent victims."

Amar added that he is also preparing a similar bill that will apply to all drivers.
