In recent meetings with politicians and academics – including several from Israel - Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has unveiled a plan that he believes will bring peace to the Middle East: A binational state for Jews and Arabs between the Mediterranean and the Jordan River, under Turkish protection. During these meetings, which several Israeli academics attended and were reported in the Israeli media over the weekend, Davutoglu sees Turkey returning to its “natural position” as the leader of the Middle East, as it was for 400 years during the reign of the Ottoman Empire, they said.

The academics quoted Davutoglu as saying in one meeting that “Israel cannot remain an independent nation for any length of time,” and that achieving an agreement that would resolve borders and other issues was impossible.
