Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz on Tuesday ordered the Chief Accountant to withhold at least 10% of funds earmarked for Tel Aviv University. The decision will come into effect immediately. A similar order was given to several government committees that deal with funding higher education.

The decision comes after several months in which the University has failed to meet budget goals, and has refused to even cooperate with Treasury officials on the problem, Steinitz's office said. The main issue surrounds unauthorized contracts with lecturers and workers, in the amount of millions of shekels.
