Tutu to Opera: Boycott Israel

South African leader Desmond Tutu has called on the Capetown Opera to cancel its scheduled visit to Israel. The opera, he said, should cancel its visit, “until Israeli and Palestinian opera lovers can have an equal opportunity to watch the performance.”

It would be “unconscionable” for the opera to perform its scheduled show, “Porgy and Bess,” in Israel, as it would “ridicule” its “"universal message of nondiscrimination.” Performing the show in Tel Aviv, he added, “advances Israel's fallacious claim to being a 'civilized democracy.'”
