Defense Ministry Director-General Udi Shani returned to Israel on Friday following  a visit to Colombia's capital Bogota at the behest of Defense Minister Ehud Barak. Shani met with with President Juan Manuel Santos, visited the local defense minister's office and met with senior military leadership. It was the first time a senior Israeli security official met with Colombia's new president and military leadership.

Colombia is considered to be one of Israel's biggest friends in the world and particularly in South America. It is a country with characteristics similar to those of Israel, and over the years the warm and friendly relations between the two countries were in part due to their similar challenges, as Colombia faced internal terror by the underground FARC movement.
