After the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, nearly all of the Greek residents of the town fled, and they have not been allowed to return. Journalists are also banned from the former Greek quarter of Famagusta, which has been sealed off. The former Greek residents of Famagusta were replaced by tens of thousands of Turkish settlers.
