A Lebanese report Thursday said that U.S. envoy George Mitchell, who is meeting with Syrian officials, is carrying with him maps of areas in the north that Israel is prepared to withdraw from in exchange for a peace treaty. However, the report said, Israel told Mitchell that it is willing to make a deal with Syria only if Damascus cuts off relations with Hizbullah, Islamic Jihad, Hamas and Iran.
According to the report, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu presented the map to U.S. President Barack Obama at their meeting three months ago, as well as to French President Nicholas Sarkozy. A report in a Kuwaiti newspaper this week said that Netanyahu sent a message to Syrian President Bashar Assad expressing his willingness to enter into an agreement framework within a year, and that Israel would be willing to withdraw from most of the Golan over a 10-15 year period.
