Four youths in upstate New York who were convicted of desecrating a synagogue will read to the court texts on the upcoming holiday of Rosh Hashana. The four, ages 16-19, were convicted of larceny after they broke into a synagogue in a bungalow colony and spray painted swastikas and other anti-Semitic scrawlings on the wall. They were caught by police red-handed as they were vandalizing the area around the synagogue.
In a plea bargain, the youths were sentenced to sx months in prison, commuted to 500 hours of community service. In addition, the judge decided to order them to write compositions on Rosh Hashana and read them aloud to the court.
