Former Israeli Denies Human Trafficking Charges
A former Israeli says that he is not guilty of what American officials have termed “the largest human trafficking case in U.S. history.” Meir Orian was accused of smuggling 400 Thai workers into the U.S., and mistreating them. He surrendered to the FBI on Friday in Hawaii, a day after the FBI sought to arrest him at his California home. Five others, all employees of Orian's Global Horizons, were arrested as well.
Officials say that the company lured the Thai workers to the U.S. with promises of high paying jobs, but when they arrived they confiscated their passports and forced them to work in substandard conditions. Orian has denied the charges. A hearing will be held Wednesday. If convicted of all the crimes the FBI says he committed, Orian could face 75 years in prison.
