Israeli historian Tom Segev's new book "Wiesenthal - The Life and Legends," published Thursday, says that Nazi hunter Simon Wiesenthal worked for Israel's Mossad intelligence agency, providing information on war criminals, neo-Nazis and Germans working on such programs in Arab countries as Egypt's rocket program. The author based his conclusions on material from Wiesenthal's estate and interviews with members of the Israeli intelligence community.
The book says that Wiesenthal began working with Israeli intelligence even before the establishment of the Mossad in 1949, including a failed attempt to capture top-Nazi Adolf Eichmann in 1948, before Eichmann's escape to Argentina, where he was eventually caught by Israel. Until now, the evidence has been that Wiesenthal acted alone.
