Children attending after-school programs in 135 Emunah centers around the country will be getting used to a new, healthier diet: The centers will no longer serve fried foods, sugar, white flour, and other easy to prepare but less than healthy foods. Instead, lunches and snacks eaten by the children in the center will be prepared by steaming, baking or broiling, and only whole grains will be used. Menus will be balanced, with an emphasis on fruits, vegetables, whole grains and high-fiber foods. Products with saturated oil and white sugar are more or less banned from the centers.

Parents of children attending the centers have been alerted to the changes, and colorful menus have been distributed. Emunah officials promise that the meals will be tasty and will appeal to children. “This is a small step that will hopefully make a large impact,” said Leora Minka, Director of Emunah Israel. “We plan to make the children and parents a partner to the process, as much as possible, so that the changes here will eventually impact on families and communities,” she said.
