The Israel Defense Forces announced Friday afternoon that the loud explosion heard in the Eshkol region of the western Negev was the controlled detonation of a device by Israel at the Gaza security fence.

It was feared at the time of the explosion that the blast was caused by a Kassam rocket or a mortar shell.
