Female Activist Arrested for Holding Torah at Kotel

Anat Hoffman, the head of Women of the Wall was arrested for praying while holding a Torah scroll during services in the women's section of the main plaza of the Western Wall (The Kotel) Monday in violation of a previous Supreme Court order intended to quell provocations. In the past compromises were made for the group to hold services off to the side by the Southern Wall instead.

Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz, the official rabbi of the Western Wall expressed deep shock and sorrow over the incident and stated "The Western Wall is a place of unity" and should not be "a place of polarization, especially on the first day of the Nine Days before Tisha B'Av, when our Holy Temple destroyed because of internal hatred."

The Masorti Movement said in response to Hoffman's arrest: "The arrest of the Women of the Wall chairwoman is a foolish act. The Western Wall plaza belongs to the entire nation."
