Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas said Saturday that if the proximity talks with Israel via the United States will see progress over the next four months, that "there would be nothing to stop us from progressing to direct negotiations."

The American-brokered proximity are geared towards extracting heavy concessions from the government of Israel that would lead to the surrender of Judea, Samaria and most of Jerusalem to the PA, as well as the forced expulsion of all ethnic Jews from those territories. Abbas's time frame of 4 months is, according to analysts, being used as leverage against Israel resuming building activities in Judea and Samaria in late September following the completion of the 10 ban on Jewish construction.
