The government approved the plan to increase aid to the Arab sector on Sunday. The plan will see some NIS 800 million distributed to 12 Arabs and Druze towns, and will be used to develop real estate, education, business, and safety. Commenting on the approval, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said that "it is important that, along with equality before the law, the non-Jewish sector also have equal economic and educational opportunity."
Deputy Knesset Speaker Majli Wahbe (Kadima) said that the plan was "throwing sand in the eyes of the public. The plan's main objective is to justify the existence of a Ministry of Minority Affairs, which does absolutely nothing to tackle the problems in the non-Jewish sector. Instead of helping towns and villages that need assistance, the government decided to impose a 'divide and conquer' regime, providing help to some towns but not to the rest,” he said.
