Sudanese Police Re-Arrest Darfur Rebels
Sudanese security officials arrested 15 Darfur rebels from the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) Wednesday just weeks after President Omar Hassan al-Bashir pardoned and freed them. President al-Bashir announced the release of 57 jailed members of JEM last month after signing a ceasefire with the rebel group. The arrests are seen by many as a sign that the government’s peace deal with the insurgent force was faltering.
