In order to reduce poverty, a joint government task force consisting of members of various ministries suggests increasing the net income of the average Israeli family by NIS 1000 within a decade. The average salary for families in the lower fifth socioeconomic percentile in Israel in 2008 was NIS 3,720 and the committee recommends increasing that figure by 2% a year for the next ten years – a total of NIS 1,000 per month in real income expansion for such families.
The committee also recommends increasing the number of working Israelis to that of members of the OECD, which Israel is set to joint this year. The government's goal, the group said, should be to ensure that 76.5% of Israelis 25-64 are employed, up from the current 60.9%. Such a goal would increase the number of workers in the economy by 30,000, and increase the gross national product by 1.5% annually.
