Convicted murderer and Jewish repentant Martin Grossman was executed at 6:17pm Eastern Standard Time by lethal injection at Florida State Prison.
Grossman was convicted of first-degree murder in the killing of 26-year-old Margaret "Peggy" Park in 1984. Since then, Grossman became a devout Jew, adopting Torah commandments and expressing deep remorse for his crime.
In recent weeks, religious Jews from across the globe petitioned Governor Charlie Crist for a stay of execution and prayed for him daily (Michoel Yechiel ben Miriam Sorah). Even the Catholic Pope expressed his hope that Grossman would not be executed.
A Chabad rabbi recited the Vidui confession with Grossman and recited prayers with him before he was killed. Immediately prior to execution, he apologized to the family of Park, saying he accepted full responsibility for her death. He also recited the Shema prayer.
The body will be released for Jewish burial.
