The Jerusalem Municipality is embarking on an ambitious program that would ban all non-essential traffic from the Old City of Jerusalem. The city plans to set up subsidized parking lots at various spots in the city, and the Egged bus company will operate a line that will travel inside the Old City. In the near future, all vehicles will be banned from the Old City, except for those belonging to residents and delivery people.
Announcing the plan Tuesday, Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat said that "we wish to ensure that the city is as pleasant as possible. We must therefore enable visitors to use new ways to get to the Old City, and reduce the number of private vehicles there. Instead of getting caught in a traffic jam, it would be better to park and travel comfortably into the Old City on a bus – or to just walk a bit," Barkat said.
