Tuesday, the 25th of Shvat on the Hebrew calendar, marks the 68th anniversary of the murder by British agents of Avraham "Yair" Stern, the commander of the pre-state Lechi (Lochamei Cherut Yisrael-Israel Freedom Fighters) underground militia, which was also known as the Stern Gang. The house where the murder took place has become a museum dedicated to the guerilla war which influenced the British to leave, making way for the establishment of the modern Jewish state of Israel.
Deputy Prime Minister Silvan Shalom will lead a delegation of four ministers to take part in the official memorial observance at the Nachlat Yitzchak cemetery. He will be joined by Education Minister Gidon Sa'ar, Culture and Sports Minister Limor Livnat and Minister without Portfolio Yossi Peled. A number of vice-ministers and Knesset members will also attend. Yehoshua Matza of the Israel Bonds organization, who was a Lechi member, is making a special trip from the United States to attend the memorial, which will include the recitation of a number of poems written by Stern.
