Five Policemen Hurt in Shuafat Disturbances

Five police officers were wounded Monday in disturbances that broke out in response to arrest operations in the Arab neighborhood of Shuafat in northern Jerusalem. One of the officers had to be taken to Hadassah Mt. Scopus Hospital. Arab sources say 10 residents of the neighborhood were lightly injured.

Around 25 suspects, wanted for disorderly conduct, bad debts and other violations, were rounded up shortly after midnight without incident, but students started throwing rocks at security personnel after school let out in the afternoon, when arrests were made for the employment of undocumented Palestinian Authority Arabs. Officers were forced to use stun grenades and rubber bullets to disperse the rioters. Another 17 were arrested between the violence and the employment of the illegals.
