Coalition Chairman Ze'ev Elkin seeks to put an end to hidden European funding of leftist groups through a bill which will determine special transparency guidelines for receiving funding from foreign governments. The bill was introduced following a Knesset gathering organized by Elkin and Member of Knesset Michael Eitan, where it was revealed the European Union countries invest tens of millions of Euros in Israeli groups with political agendas, including those that supplied the Goldstone Commission on last winter's Cast Lead counter-terror operation in Gaza with material that condemned Israel.
According to the bill's explanation, many of the political groups that receive this funding do not fit the definition of non-profit organization that is currently required to report such funding. The sponsors say that it is easy to get around the current reporting requirements through the use of third parties or delaying tactics that make the reporting irrelevant. Another shortcoming is that the law does not apply to activities or publications of these groups.
