MK Anastasia Michaeli (Yisrael Beiteinu) has proposed a law which could reduce the cost of textbooks for Israeli students. The law, which passed its first Knesset reading Wednesday, prohibits the sale of "package deals" for textbooks required in schools. According to Michaeli, textbooks that students are required to have often come bundled with "extras," like workbooks or information CDs.
The add-ons raise the cost of the textbooks, she says, and bundling the workbook and the textbook prevents parents from passing on or selling the package to others. With the new law, Michaeli says, parents could end up saving money on textbooks.
