The Bible Lands Museum in Jerusalem will host a conference, "Living the Lunar Calendar, Time, Text and Tradition" from Saturday night to Monday evening. Leading international scholars will investigate the place of calendar reckoning in human society and culture.
According to a museum media release, Saturday night's lectures will deal in astronomy, the Moon’s movements and its importance in determining the time. The second day of the conference will be devoted to the history and use of the Jewish solar-lunar calendar, with sessions devoted to Mesopotamia. The day will conclude with a night tour to Qumran - home of the Dead Sea Scrolls - which serves as a living testimony to the issues examined in the conference. The third day will be devoted to the Hebrew calendar with respect to other cultures: the Classical World, the Christian World, America and the Far East.
An extremely important rare cuneiform tablet, prominently displayed in the heart of the museum's Gallery of the Patriarchs, sheds light on the roots of the Hebrew calendar whose origins stem from Ancient Babylon.
