Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon is scheduled to meet Sunday morning with the United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Michael Williams. The discussion will focus on the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 Second Lebanon War, as well as Israel's rumored pullout from the northern half of the village of Ghajar, which straddles the Israel-Lebanon border.
Israel maintains a military presence to guard against terror and drug smuggling. Williams told reporters in Beirut that an Israeli exit from the Lebanese side of the border will help lead to resolution of other issues. Those issues include the re-arming of Hizbullah terrorists following the 2006 war and Israeli security overflights to monitor weapons smuggling. Ayalon said this week that senior officials at the Foreign Ministry are formulating a recommendation to propose to the government.
