A memorial ceremony for the crew of the submarine Dakar, forty two years after she was lost at sea. The ceremony will take place at the Dakar Memorial at Mt. Herzl Cemetery in Jerusalem. Attending the ceremony will be Deputy Defense Minister Matan Vilnai, IDF Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi, and Israel Navy Commander Admiral Eliezer Marom.
The Dakar was last seen off the coast of Gibralter on January 15, 1968, after being refurbished and tested in England and Scotland. Her last known position, on January 24 of that year, was off the coast of Crete, and when no further messages were received, the Israel Navy, alomg with navy and air units from other countries, began a search for the Dakar, which proved fruitless. Sixty nine sailors were lost in the Dakar tragedy.
