Communications minister Moshe Kachlon on Tuesday authorized the Israel Electric Company to set up two pilot programs that would enable the IEC to become an internet infrastructure provider. One project would have the IEC set up an infrastructure for FTTH connections, providing far faster internat connections than are available today in Israel, while in the second project the IEC would set up a cell-based connection system.
Kachlon said that "there is already hundreds of thousands of kilometers of optical wiring around the country. The IEC has about 2,500 kilometers, with the rest belonging to the Highways Authority and Israel Railways. I have spoken about this with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, and we want to encourage this competition in the area of internet infrastructure."
