According to the Associated Press, United States President Barack Obama and his Russian counterpart, Dmitry Medvedev, agreed by telephone on Saturday to extend talks to secure a new pact to cut vast arsenals of nuclear weapons. The new pact would be a successor to the Cold War era START-1 treaty and is believed by many analysts to be aimed at impeding Iranian nuclear ambitions.
