Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon (Yisrael Beitenu) will travel to Rome on Wednesday to complete discussions with the Vatican that have been continuing for more than a decade. The Vatican seeks political standing in Israel’s capital as well as control over a number of Holy sites. The discussions are expected to deal with the Catholic Church’s legal and economic status in Jerusalem and are aimed at reducing recent disputes, particularly regarding taxation and expropriation, in order to improve the State of Israel’s relationship with the Vatican. Ayalon, who is married to a Christian, has in his delegation officials from the foreign, justice and finance ministries.
