A law that would require a referendum before any surrender of territory annexed to Israel will be sent to the Knesset for a vote on its first reading, after a Knesset committee on Tuesday rejected objections by Minister Dan Meridor. The law will cover areas such as neighborhoods of Jerusalem over the Green Line, and the Golan Heights, which Israel has full sovereignty over.
If the government wishes to make a deal to surrender these areas, according to the law, a referendum must be called within 180 days of the agreement – and any deal would be contingent on its passing the referendum. In order to avoid the referendum, 80 Mks would have to approve the deal.
