Commenting on the EU's plan to take up a Swedish recommendation to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of a not-yet-existent Palestinian state, MK Ofir Akunis (Likud) quoted a comment by former Prime Minister Menachem Begin, who said that Jerusalem was not capital of Israel by virtue of a Knesset law, and not because of a Basic Law, but because it has been the capital of the Jewish people since King David proclaimed it so 3,000 years ago.
Akunis added that Jerusalem was the capital of the Jewish people long before there was a Sweden, and long before the establishment of the countries of all those who brazenly suggested that Jerusalem is anything else.
